: A music teacher hailing from a little known place in Malappuram district is busy tuning a rare “composition that will pay homage to poet Kamala Surayya” on her third death anniversary on Friday. Mankada Damodaran, a retired music teacher, has chosen the Arabic version of Surayya's poem ‘Ya Allah'. He believes there is no better way to pay tribute to the poet than composing music to that poem. Mr. Damodaran says his work is almost complete. He is waiting for Hanna Yasir, the Muslim girl who studied Carnatic music and performed in temples, including Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavati Temple, Angadipuram, to give voice to the evocative lines of Surayya.
“It is an altogether different experience giving music to the Arabic version of Kamala Surayya's ‘Ya Allah', says Mr. Damodaran, who has done Carnatic music with Islamic poems earlier.
Mr. Damodaran has erased the ‘touch-me-not' attitude that existed between Muslim society and Carnatic music.
It was under his tutelage that young Hanna Yasir rendered Quranic couplets at some temples in classical music form. She passed her SSLC examinations this year with A-plus in all subjects, and is seeking admission to the Plus One course.
Mr. Damodaran, who teaches music at ‘Thampuru', near Mankada Kovilakam, and has more than 1,000 disciples of repute, has scored music for many songs, dramas and telefilms. Communal amity has been a motto of this 62-year-old music teacher, who would be a regular face among the jury of school youth festivals.
Translated into Arabic by K. Moidu Moulavi and published by Islamic Publishing House, Surayya's poem ‘Ya Allah' has been well received in the Muslim world, including the Gulf.
The poem expresses Surayya's ardent love of God in the following words: ‘Ya Allah, forgive me, my Lord.. My voice turns bitter, as of a weary lover. How long more, my Lord, is the waiting, for this Surayya, the hapless, who has fathomed the profundity of love, to reach you, the formless, to learn the ecstasy of another embracing.'
